Community calendar for Oct. 22

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., has a number of upcoming events. Registration is required for each children’s class and some adult programs. Call 873-3149 to register.

• Pumpkin Pageant — 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22. Bring a giant pumpkin, homegrown, decorated or carved. The pumpkins will parade down the runway for all to see. The 2008 Giant Pumpkin King and Queen will be crowned this evening. A pumpkin dessert will be served following the pageant. Open to all ages. Registration required.

• Murder He Writes: Solve a Mystery with Author Michael Lewin — 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, Lora Hussey Program Room. Mystery writer and Indiana native Michael Lewin will ask the audience to solve the mystery yarn he will weave during this interactive presentation. Participants will finish the story and read or perform its ending. Prizes will be awarded. Lewin will sign copies of his novels, available for purchase after the program.

• Computer Classes — Oct. 29 to Nov. 19. The library will offer single-session, hands-on computer classes on a variety of topics. Class size is limited to 10 students to ensure individual attention. Each three-hour session costs $25.50 and includes a manual. Payment is due at time of registration. Visit the library Web site for schedule of classes.

• Happy Halloween — 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. Ages 4 to 6. Wear a Halloween costumes and come for Halloween fun. Treat yourself to scary stories, spooky songs and make a frightening decoration.

• Night at the Library — 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 31. Ages 7 to 12. Sneak into the library after hours dressed in your best costume for a fabulously frightening Halloween scare. Join the party for scary stories, games and fun.

• Fall Break Movie Break — 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, Lora Hussey Room. Enjoy a movie at the library while snacking on popcorn and lemonade. Grades 6 to 12.

• Presidential Campaign Button Collection — Now through Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Fifth and Sixth street entrances. A historic collection of presidential campaign buttons from the 1940 contest between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Wendell Wilkie to today’s John McCain versus Barack Obama race. This display of hundreds of unique buttons is on loan from Zionsville resident Ron Clark.



‘Children’s Champion’ sought

The Boone County Child Protection Team, a committee of citizens and public servants who review child abuse and neglect cases in Boone County, is seeking nominees for its annual “Children’s Champion” award. The award is given annually to a person or persons who best represents the interests of children in the communities of Boone County. The recipient will be announced at the annual Boone County Chamber of Commerce Dinner on Wednesday, Nov. 12.

Pumpkin Day slated for Lions Park

Enjoy Pumpkin Day at Lions Park from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26. This free event is a “thank you” from the Lions Club to the Zionsville community for its ongoing support. It will feature free pumpkins for painting, hayrides, moonwalks, games, a coloring contest, food and more. The annual Lion Costume Contest will be at 4 p.m. in the gazebo. Bluebird Society

to meet

The Boone County Bluebird Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at the Boone REMC Community Room, 1207 Indianapolis Ave., Lebanon. Speaker Roger Hedge, an ecologist with the DNR Division of Nature Preserves, will talk on “Saving Indiana’s Remaining Natural Areas.” Bluebird information and nesting boxes will be available. Zion Nature Center

• Fall Break Activities — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 25 and 26. All ages. Come for fall break crafts, animal talks, hikes and more. Free.

• Pumpkin Smashing — Every Saturday (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and Sunday (noon to 5 p.m.) in November. Come for a smashing good time and reduce landfill waste. Bring your old pumpkins to smash and add to our compost pile. Free.

• Crafty Crows — 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 1 and 2, all ages. Why do crows congregate in large numbers? Are crows smart? Come find the answers and learn more interesting facts about the American crow and create a crow craft. Free.

Archery, tomahawks and sling-shots,

oh my!

Boy Scout troops Nos. 358, 804 and 69 invite all boys 10 to 12 years old to practice archery, throw tomahawks and shoot sling-shots from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Lions Park gazebo. Celebrate Emily

at Irsay Pavilion

The Emily Yott Foundation presents the Third Annual “Celebrate Emily” event from 8 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Robert Irsay Pavilion, 1303 W. 116th St., Carmel. The adults-only event will include dancing, Las Vegas-type casino action, a silent and live auction with celebrity auctioneers, as well as appetizers and a cash bar for $35 per couple and $20 per individual.

Jennie DeVoe peforms at The Sanctuary

Singer Jennie DeVoe will perform songs from her new CD, “Strange Sunshine” at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at The Sanctuary, 75 N. Main St. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with light hors d’oeuvres served from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Throughout the evening, heavy hors d’oeuvres, desserts and specialty drinks will be available. Local Sorority selling town ‘throws’

The local Zeta Sigma Chapter of Zionsville’s Tri Kappa Sorority is selling tapestry “throws” depicting Zionsville’s Main Street as a fundraiser for Zionsville scholarship funds and community activities such as library programs. The all-cotton throws, measuring 48 inches by 60 inches, with a 2-inch fringe on each side, are $40; a discount will apply to purchases of three or more. Throws may be purchased at the Greater Zionsville Chamber of Commerce, 135 S. The throws will be available for purchase until year’s end.
