Library events

• Teen Volunteer Corps Applications Available — April 1 to May 15. Applications will be accepted from students in grades 6 to 12 for the library’s Teen Volunteer Corps. Participants agree to work at least one, two-hour shift each week throughout the summer. Vacations, camps and summer school can all be worked around. Volunteers must attend a Teen Volunteer Corps training session May 15 or May 21. Applications are available at the reference desk and must be submitted by May 15.

• AARP Tax Aide — 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, April 2 and 9, Lora Hussey and Olive Hoffman rooms. Taxpayers age 60 and older, as well as low-and middle-income earners, may visit the library for free income tax help on a first-come, first-served basis. E-filing service only. No reservations accepted. A list of required documents is available at the teen and adult reference desk or by calling 873-8341.

• Paws to Read — 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, ages 6-10. Share a book with a furry four-legged friend from TheraPets of Indiana.

• The Music Group Presents: Spring Awakenings — 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, Lora Hussey Room. Rare classical and jazz recordings, all with the word “spring” in their titles, will be featured during this informal music appreciation event.

• April Showers — 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Friday, April 10, for ages 3 to 6. Make a “springy” craft with Miss Dawn. Parental assistance needed.

• Live Action Clue — 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 10. After the library doors are locked and it appears everyone has gone, students in grades 6 to 12 may enjoy a night of murder and intrigue. Participants will wear the hats of both detective and suspect as they move through the library after hours to discover just who did it — in which room and with what weapon. Snacks and prizes will be included.

• Library Closed for Easter — Sunday, April 12, the library will be closed. Regular hours will resume at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 13.

• National Library Week Celebration — April 13 to 18. Visit the library every day this week to submit an entry for a prize basket full of international bestsellers and assorted treats. Patrons may submit one entry per day.

• Books Over Coffee — Noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 14. Take a break, bring a sack lunch and join fellow book lovers to talk about favorite authors and their latest novels. This informal book discussion group meets the second Tuesday of each month. Coffee and treats are provided. Pre-registration is not required for this drop-in program. Sessions will continue May 12, June 9 and July 14.

• Seed Exchange — 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14. Planning a new family garden, but unsure how to begin? Families, with children ages 12 or younger, may learn the basics of gardening and score a few free seeds during this educational program. Participants are encouraged to bring flower and vegetable seeds to trade. A follow-up program will be held in the fall so families can show off their green thumbs. Registration begins April 3.

• Puff Painting — 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 15, for ages 7 to 12. Get creative at the library with some puff paint.



Programs upcoming at Zion Nature Center

• The Turtles are Awake — 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, April 4 and 5, all ages. The turtles are out of hibernation and ready for spring. Come meet our resident box turtles, learn some facts and observe their hungry appetites. Free, with optional turtle crafts.

• Closed for Easter — The Nature Center will be closed on Easter Sunday, April 12.

• Z’GreenFest — 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 19, all ages. Celebrate Earth and Arbor Day at the third annual Z’GreenFest. Enjoy live music from “Island Breezes,” interactive activities for children, educational exhibitors, “Silly Safaris” with a live animal program, and food from Dellulo’s Italian Bistro. In case of rain, the event will take place in the Eagle Elementary gym. Free.



Gardenfest 2009

set for April 4

Are you ready for spring? The Boone County Master Gardeners are busy making preparations for another Gardenfest.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 4, at the Boone County 4-H Fairgrounds in Lebanon. Free tree seedlings will be given to guests as long as available. Free seminars are scheduled each hour for valuable tips and strategies for your landscapes and vegetable gardens. Browse for gardening gifts at the many outstanding vendor booths.

The Village Garden Club will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 7 at Altum's Nursery on Michigan Road.

Zionsville schools schedule Kindergarten enrollment

“round-ups”

All Zionsville elementary schools will have their annual Kindergarten “round-ups” to register children for fall 2009 Kindergarten classes. Children must be 5 years of age on or before Aug. 1, 2009 to attend Kindergarten. Students turning 5 during the month of August will be given an automatic waiver. Following is the registration schedule:

• Eagle Elementary School, 350 N. Sixth St., 873-1234: 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 9. No appointment necessary.

• Pleasant View Elementary School, 4700 S. 975 East, 873-2376: 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 8 and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9. Call for appointment.

• Stonegate Elementary School, 7312 W. Stonegate Drive, 873-8050: 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 16. Call for appointment.

• Union Elementary School, 11750 E. 300 South, 733-4007: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 15. Call for appointment.

Bring your children to the round-up. In addition, bring proof of residency (utility bill, purchase agreement, any document showing name and address); original birth certificate; immunization records; picture of child that the school can keep.

hosts Chamber

of Commerce

After Hours

The Rotary Club is hosting a Chamber of Commerce After Hours event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 14 at Noah Grants Grill House and Raw Bar, 65 S. First St., Zionsville.

The event will welcome five special guests from Africa who are part of the Group Study Exchange program. The exchange program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for businesspeople and professionals between the ages of 25 and 40 who are in the early stages of their careers.

The five-member teams consist of one Rotarian and four non-rotarians who will visit the central Indiana District for the month of April. The Rotary Club also will be sending a five-member team to Africa in May to visit a Rotary Club there.

The cost of the program is paid by Rotary. This After Hours would be a great opportunity for anyone ages 25 to 40 who would be interested in participating in a program that would allow them to travel abroad.

Civil War author

to speak at

Lebanon library

Lafayette author Bill J. Crane will speak at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in the Lebanon Public Library’s Ralph Stark Heritage Center, 110 E. Washington St., Lebanon. Crane will speak on his book, “The First Flag on the Summit,” a history of the 15th Indiana Civil War regiment. Crane’s discovery that his great grandfather and at least 15 other relatives served in the Civil War led to his interest in this particular regiment, which was mustered in Lafayette. Following his talk, Crane will sign books.

Celebrate spring with May baskets, Mother’s Day gifts and Maypole dancing at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center’s “springy” experience for pre-schoolers. From 10:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday, April 15 and Friday, April 17, children ages 3 to 5 years, with an adult, are invited to participate for free. Registration is required.



4-H exchange

The Indiana 4-H Youth Development Program is seeking families interested in serving as hosts for youth from Japan the weeks of July 23 through Aug. 15. Applications, which must be completed by April 15, are available at www.four-h.purdue.edu.



‘Kitchens of Zionsville’ tour on tap

“Kitchens of Zionsville,” a tour of six Zionsville designer kitchens, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 25. The event is sponsored by the P.H. Sullivan Museum Guild and all proceeds will benefit the museum’s historical projects. The tour will include remodeled historic homes and will present fresh ideas for your own home.

Tickets are $15 and a tour booklet and directions to each participating home are included. They are available at the museum, 225 W. Hawthorne St., and from guild members. The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
