Westfield —
Last week after the first tournament of the season, Zionsville head wrestling coach Bob Brennan thought his team got a little tired in the final dual match of the day.
There was no such problem Saturday, Dec. 1. The Eagles went 5-0 at the Shamrock Duals, defeating host Westfield 35-22 to capture the team championship.
“Our kids really wrestled well today,” Brennan said. “We took some things from our first tournament at Lafayette Jeff and emphasized that we wanted to finish the last couple matches of the day strong and making sure we didn’t give up any team points. I really thought that overall we did a much better job — I was very pleased.
“It is one of those things that with five matches in a day, you start and are like ‘Let’s go, let’s go,’ and then you get to the fourth and fifth matches and sometimes kids think ‘oh I’m going to lose, forget it’ and give up a pin, or they are tired and don’t go for that extra point. We really emphasized how we were going to end this tournament. And I was just happy with the way they ended it.”
Zionsville defeated Speedway (77-6), Princeton (64-12) and Northview (50-24) to win its pool and advance to the championship bracket.
The Eagles defeated Evansville Memorial 42-18 in the semifinals to earn a berth in the championship match against HCC-rival Westfield.
The Shamrocks struck first — going up 6-0 after a pin at 152, but the Eagles won the next eight matches.
