Zionsville —
A fast start Saturday afternoon, Dec. 1, for Zionsville did not give way to a positive result for the Lady Eagles when they hosted previously winless Avon in Hoosier Crossroads Conference action. The Orioles (1-4, 1-2) doubled up the Eagles (2-4, 1-2) after Zionsville jumped to a 10-2 early lead and earned a 52-35 win.
“We talked about playing with the lead, and we got it for once, but we did not play well after that,” Zionsville coach Andy Maguire said. “We were up 10-2 and we had two free throws, but we missed both of them, and it just went totally downhill from there.”
After giving up an early basket the Eagles jumped ahead 10-2 in the first five minutes of the game on the strength of three-pointers from Grace Maguire and Maddie Yott. Those would be the only two triples Zionsville would make and were six of the nine points that Yott and Maguire scored all day.
Avon was able to answer with a 10-0 run over its own to move back in front 13-10 at the 5:26 mark of the second quarter. The Eagles would take another lead with a small 6-0 run to make it 16-13, but from the 4:18 mark of the second quarter Avon would outscore the Eagles 39-19 the rest of the way.
