The Zionsville Lady Eagles were looking to carry the momentum from a season-opening victory against Crispus Attucks in its Boone County match-up with the Class 3A No. 5 Lebanon Lady Tigers Saturday night, Nov. 10.
But the Tigers quickly squashed the momentum. Lebanon outscored Zionsville 25-4 in the first quarter and went on to the 72-33 victory.
“We had some lulls, but we came out well and I felt really good after the first quarter,” first-year Lebanon head coach Beth DeVinney said. “We have a lot of things that we are working on, and our 2-2-1 press is one of those things that we worked really hard on the last couple of weeks. I thought the kids did a really good job with that. We have some improvement to do in our zones. We played a lot of man tonight, which is good and that is something we won’t do much of. Overall I thought the effort was really good and obviously, Katie Curtis and Kristen Spolyar are two really tough kids to defend.”
Curtis and Spolyar combined for 45 points in the game, including 17 in the first quarter.
They were also a big part of the Tigers’ defense that forced nine first-quarter turnovers.
“The first quarter they set the tone,” Zionsville head coach Andy Maguire said. “We knew they were really good, and we tried to simulate some of that in practice but couldn’t. Katie Curtis — there is no way to simulate that change of speed, and she does an outstanding job. They are so physical; we tried to simulate that but we can’t. They do a great job of being physical in the right way. They are just strong, athletic team.”
Lebanon led 4-2 early in the game before a 15-0 run pushed the lead to 17. A basket by the Eagles’ Laurie King slowed down the Tigers for a little while, but Lebanon scored the final six points of the first quarter and the first six of the second to make it 31-4.
Zionsville played even the rest of the half thanks to Maddie Yott, who scored all eight of her points in three-straight possessions in the second quarter.
The eight points were a team high.
“Maddie, it is never going to look pretty with her, but she knows how to score,” Maguire said. “She is the one kid on our team that really knows how to score and make things happen. She had a nice run there, and her biggest problem tonight was she got in foul trouble. We need her on the court for her scoring.”
