Avon drops Zionsville

Mission accomplished.

On Avon’s senior night, the Orioles senior softball players made sure they would be remembered.

And they did something no other team had done.

Avon, who had already wrapped up the Hoosier Crossroads Conference title, went undefeated through conference play, defeated Zionsville 8-1 Tuesday, May 15.

Both were firsts in school history for an Orioles softball team.

“It’s a huge accomplishment, this conference is loaded and it’s so competitive,” Avon coach Jenny Shayotovich said. “We have never won it outright, we have tied it, so to go undefeated is quite an accomplishment, we are pretty excited about that.”

Zionsville got an early start when senior leadoff hitter Sarah Lawrence tripled and scored when junior pitcher Bri Wagner reached on an error.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, that is all the offense they would get on this night.

The Orioles matched them in the bottom of the first when senior Riley Larkin doubled and scored on fellow senior Alli Bexell’s single to tie the game.

After that, Orioles senior pitcher Haleigh Chasteen took over.

Chasteen would pitch five innings, giving up just the one run and two hits without a walk for the victory. Junior Lizzy Snodgrass finished the final two innings giving up no runs and only one hit, while striking out one.

The Orioles offense provided Chasteen  all the runs needed, scoring two more in the second inning with timely hits and by moving runners in scoring position. Avon added three more runs in the third and two more in the fifth inning.

The Eagles defense simply couldn’t stop the Orioles offense.

“Our defense was out of rhythm tonight, our routine stuff became difficult and it’s always hard to win that way,” Zionsville coach Lori Esparza said. “The wheels fell off defensively, our two pitchers took care of what they had to, but when your defense let’s you down, it’s hard to end up on the top of the score.”

But going into sectionals, Esparza was confident about her team.

“We have everything it takes to go far in the end,” she said. “If the girls start working together as a team, they are unstoppable.”
