Cleveland takes state title in 50

Eagles place third overall behind Carmel, Penn

Indianapolis — Last year leaving the state meet, Zionsville junior Alex Cleveland told head coach Scott Kubly that she was going to win the state title in the 50-yard freestyle.

She accomplished that mission Saturday, Feb. 9 at the IUPUI Natatorium winning the event in a time of 22.99.

“It feels great,” Cleveland said. “Last year our 200-free relay won, and it is not quite the same because I am not sharing it with the other three girls, but it is really nice — especially in the 50 because it is one of my favorite events. It feels amazing.”

All eight girls finished within 1.1 seconds of each other. Cleveland said she could tell it was going to be a close race but didn’t really know where the other girls were.

“I could kind of tell on the turn that they were all right with me, but in the 50 that is how it always is,” she said. “So I was just thinking it was anyone’s game, and I didn’t really know where I was — I just wanted to get my hand on the wall.”

Kubly said he wasn’t surprised that she came back and won the race after saying she was going to last season.

“That is just her,” Kubly said. “When she sets her eye on something she is going to get it. She is just a great kid and works really hard.”

Cleveland was part of two third-place relays.

The 200-yard medley which consisted of Cleveland., Amanda Short, Taite Kitchel and Grace Einterz placed third in a time of 1:44.42, just .20 out of second.

The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Cleveland, Kylie Mihok, Anna Savery and Einterz placed third in 1:35.55.
