No.1 Greyhounds shut down Eagles, 51-28

Carmel — The Zionsville Eagles basketball knew they had a tough challenge Saturday, Feb. 2, traveling to the top-ranked Carmel Greyhounds.

Carmel showed why they are No. 1 ranked team in the state, holding the Eagles to their fewest point total since 1996-97 in a 51-28 win.

“We didn’t play well obviously,” Zionsville head coach Shaun Busick said. “We had too many turnovers, and we shot poorly; but give them credit because that is their defense. You always hear the saying ‘defense wins championships’ and they defend and rebound. They are a great team. There is a reason they are the No. 1 team in the state, and it is that they are the best defensive team we have played in my seven years here. Offensively you can’t do anything because they are so good defensively. They are tough minded, and they work together as a unit, and I was quite impressed.”

The Eagles trailed 12-8 after a quarter, but the Greyhounds opened the second quarter on a 9-0 run to grab a 21-8 lead.

Carmel held Zionsville scoreless until 1:59 remained in the quarter when Dalton Judd scored to end a 6:42 draught and led 25-13 at the halftime break.

The Eagles got within eight with 4:03 left in the third quarter on two free throws by Judd, but Carmel responded with a 9-0 run to take a 36-19 lead.

Michael Sollman tried to bring the Eagles back, scoring all nine points in a 9-2 run to get within 38-28 with 5:36 to play, but the Greyhounds closed the game on a 13-0 run.

Sollman led the Eagles with 11 points.
