Lady Eagles come up short against WeBo

Inside game lifts Lady Stars in late going

Dover — All night long, the Zionsville Lady Eagles basketball team made it nearly impossible for the Western Boone Lady Stars to get the ball inside to their leading scorer Emily Harrison.

But with a four-point lead in the final minutes of the game, the Stars finally found her. Harrison made her lone field goal of the game with 1:08 left to push the lead to six and the Stars held off Zionsville 49-40.

“We are almost too unselfish when it comes to throwing it to Emily,” Western Boone head coach Rich Schelsky said. “A lot of times when you coach and you have good post players it is hard to get your other kids to look in the post all the time but our kids are the opposite. They look in the post every time they catch it. When Zionsville went man finally with a minute to go and we got the ball reversed one time and got a one-on-one situation in the post, Nicole (Chance) made a good pass and Emily made a good finish. That was good execution. Our kids get that part of the game, they are just going to have to get the other part when teams take Emily away we are going to have to find other ways to score.”

Harrison attempted just three shots in the game and was held to six points.

Zionsville double-teamed her most of the night, making it hard for the Stars to feed the post.

“In terms of our defensive execution I thought we did a great job tonight,” Zionsville head coach Andy Maguire said. “We worked all practice Monday on guarding Harrison front and back and I thought our kids executed it to a T. Harrison did some good things, and their other kids stepped up at times and made plays, but overall we got them out of their comfort zone and that was huge.”

Schelsky said that especially early in the game, the Stars didn’t do a good job of stepping up and hitting shots when they couldn’t feed Harrison in the post.
