Zionsville —
The Western Boone Stars brought their 3-0 record in to Zionsville Saturday night, Dec. 1, for a Boone County rivalry game and tough early season test against the 2-0 Eagles.
After hanging tough early, the Eagles' size was just too much in a 72-51 win.
The first quarter saw some hot shooting from both squads as Western Boone connected on three 3-pointers to keep pace with the Eagles.
On the other end of the floor Western Boone found out early that Zionsville sophomore center Derrik Smits was going to be a tough out. Smits was active early and, in the first frame alone, scored three baskets and had an assist.
After the game, Eagle Head Coach Shaun Busick praised his center.
“He took major steps forward with his aggressiveness,” Busick said. “He’s big, and he’s a good enough passer, he can find the open guy.”
The unselfishness didn’t end with Smits, Busick was very pleased with the unselfish nature his entire team played with.
On the night the Eagles finished with 18 assists.
“Our team was very unselfish, and when you take care of the ball and defend, you are going to have a good team,” Busick said.
