Zionsville Swim Club excels at divisional, state meets

The Zionsville Swim Club qualified 46 swimmers for the Northwest Divisional Swim Meet, from Feb. 29 to March 2, in Crawfordsville. Six swimmers were named divisional champions.

Hannah Mitchell won the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle in the U-12 division. Ben Gavette won the 100 breaststroke in the U-12 division. Madison Stacey won the 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle in the U-14 division.

Gretchen Smitson won the 100 breaststroke in the U-14 division. Leighann Mattson won the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke in the U-14 division. Finally, Andew Cardosi won the 500 freestyle in the open division.

Other swimmers who finished in the top 16 in individual events include: Amanda Kernodle, Amanda Short, Anna Chapman, Anna Savery, Cally Sampson, Casey Smitson, Charlie Hicks, Chris Ingram, Elizabeth Mercer, Emma Bumbar, Grace Einterz, Gretchen Beehler, Jared Hall, Julie Mitchell, Karina Welker, Mackenzie Berger, Madeline Brown, Margaret Hicks, Melanie Kernodle, Matt Sanders, Max Bohrer, Nick Torrance, Payton Longest, Ryan Bohl, Thomas Wimmer, Tyler Harmon and Will Savery.

The Zionsville Swim Club had a record number of swimmers at the Indiana Senior State Swim Meet held at the IUPUI Natatorium, March 7 to March 9.

Two years ago, the team scored at the meet for the first time in 10 years. This year, the team finished 11th overall, with the boys taking sixth. To qualify, swimmers must have met designated time standards to compete against teams from the around the state. Zionsville had 24 top-24 finishers.

Ryan Connolly finished sixth in the 400 IM, eighth in the 200 IM, 19th in the 200 backstroke, 20th in the 500 freestyle, and 24th in the 100 breaststroke.

Colleen Drew finished 13th in the 200 backstroke, and 22nd in the 100 backstroke. Chris Mattson took seventh in the 1650 freestyle, ninth in the 1000 freestyle, 13th in the 500 freestyle, and 22nd in the 200 freestyle.

Leighann Mattson finished 11th in the 1650 freestyle, 17th in the 1000 freestyle, and 21st in the 500 freestyle. Elizabeth Mercer took 24th in the 1650 freestyle. Sam Newcomer took 13th in the 100 butterfly, 14th in the 200 butterfly, and 22nd in the 100 freestyle.

The women’s 800 freestyle relay team of Leighann Mattson, Elizabeth Lyon, Colleen Drew, and Zoe Mattingly finished sixth.

The men’s 400 freestyle relay team of Chris Mattson, Ryan Sickle, Sam Newcomer, and Ryan Connolly finished seventh.

The men’s 800 freestyle relay team of Chris Mattson, Ryan Sickle, Thomas Wimmer, and Ryan Connolly took the 10th spot.

The men’s 400 medley relay team of Ryan Connolly, Robert Hicks, Sam Newcomer, and Chris Mattson finished 12th.

The women’s 400 medley relay team of Colleen Drew, Casey Smitson, Zoe Mattingly, and Katie Newcomer finished 15th.

The women’s 800 freestyle relay team of Katie Newcomer, Keely Simonson, Elizabeth Mercer, and MacKenzie Berger took 20th.
