Eagles rally, beat Orioles

Thirty-six seconds was the amount of time the Zionsville boys basketball team led the Avon Orioles Friday night, Jan. 29, but it was the most important time of the game.

Tied at 73-73 with 26 seconds on the clock Eagle Jack Isenbarger drove a wide-open lane and deposited the ball in the basket.

Avon missed its chance at the other end and the Eagles sprinted away with the ball, and the contest, as Zionsville’s Chris Roberts sealed the game with a lay up as time expired to make the final score 77-73.

“My heart is still beating very fast,” Zionsville coach Shaun Busick said. “It was really a team effort and you can’t single out one guy.”

It did come down predominately to two players for the Eagles though, seniors Blake Lueders and Roberts. Roberts attacked Avon from the outside and Lueders did damage in the paint.

Roberts kept Zionsville within striking distance, knocking down seven three-pointers and led all scorers with 25 points.

Lueders totaled 13 points, all from around the basket and was a physical presence øon both sides of the court.

Losing is never easy and after such a strong effort for much of the game, it left Oriole coach Jason Young dismayed.

“It’s obviously disappointing and it’s easy to look at the last minute of the game to lose the lead with two lay ups,” Young said. “You have to give Zionsville a lot of credit; they are a senior laden team and made some big baskets down the stretch.”

Avon went on an 8-0 run to begin the game and built a 13-3 advantage midway through the first period.

The Orioles led by as many as 12 points in the second quarter thanks to great shooting as Avon went 8-of-14 from behind the arc, but the Eagles were only down five at the break.

“We were excited at halftime,” Busick said. “The way Avon shot the ball we could have easily been down 24 points and they really shot the lights out. You could talk about our shooting, but how about theirs?”

Zionsville came out with a renewed energy in the third and tied the ball game in the end of the quarter at 50-50, but Juan Sarver knocked down a basket to end the period and put Avon up by two.

Sarver scored 13 points, all in the second half and made some big shots in the last two periods to hold Zionsville off for as long as possible.

“He made some clutch plays down the stretch and had a few big baskets,” Young said. “When he is attacking the basket for us, usually good things happen.”

Zionsville took a brief lead early in the fourth, but Sarver answered back putting Avon back on top.

Unfortunately for the Orioles, it would be the Eagles who had the last word, and baskets, on how this game ended.

Austin Burgett led Avon with 19 points and eight rebounds while teammate Kendall Griffin totaled 16 points.
