Last season was a struggle for the Zionsville Lady Eagles basketball team as they finished with a 4-17 record.
Head coach Andy Maguire said the main goal is to improve on that record this year.
“In terms of wins and losses, we haven’t really set any goals,” Maguire said. “One of our main expectations is that we are going to be better than last year. This group should do that. We have a lot of girls returning. We have two seniors and our junior group got a lot of experience. We also want to compete better in the conference, too. We don’t think we are going to win it by any means, but we think we should be around that .500 mark.”
The Eagles have been practicing for two weeks now and had a good showing Oct. 1 in a scrimmage against West Lafayette Harrison.
“We have been really pleased with practice so far,” Maguire said. “The girls have a good attitude. We had a really good scrimmage against West Lafayette Harrison; we saw a lot of good things. Really, to this point, there is nothing we are really upset with. We need to get in better shape obviously, and we need to get some game experience — which will start tomorrow night.”
It is fairly uncommon for two conference opponents to scrimmage against each other in the preseason.
But Maguire said that doesn’t bother the Eagles.
“A lot of people wonder why we do that because it seems weird,” Maguire said. “But one, we are always pretty even so it is a good scrimmage game for us. It is not somebody that is a lot better or worse than us. Competitive wise, it is a good scrimmage. And second, we play them so late in the regular season that it doesn’t bother either one of us. The only bad part of it is it is a long drive.”
As for leaders this season, Maguire pointed out his two seniors but said they expect a lot from all their players.
