Indianapolis —
The Zionsville Lady Eagles wanted to end the regular season on a high note Tuesday, Jan. 29, when they traveled south to face Indianapolis Northwest.
Zionsville grabbed control of the game in the second quarter and held off the host Space Pioneers in a 44-31 victory.
“We have scouted them a couple times and knew that (Maycee Davis) and (MaKyla Croom) were really good,” Zionsville head coach Andy Maguire said. “We knew we had to guard those two and hope the others don’t hit shots, and I thought our kids did a great job with that. Elizabeth Schuler and Grace Maguire did a great job chasing them around.”
The Eagles held Davis and Croom to six points combined in the game.
Zionsville scored the first eight points in the game, but Northwest closed the deficit to 13-10 by the end of a quarter.
The Eagles held the Space Pioneers scoreless for the first 7:57 of the second quarter, but could only extend the lead to 19-12 at the break.
Zionsville led 28-24 with 1:51 left in the third quarter, but Becky Miller and Mary Baluyut hit back-to-back jumpers to end the quarter to bring some momentum to Zionsville.
Northwest hit the first shot of the fourth quarter to make the score 32-26, but Zionsville used a 13-0 run spanning 6:24 to put the game away.
“I thought we kept it out of their best two players hands and made others shoot it,” Maguire said. “One key was rebounding. Laurie (King), Cyra (Bammer), Becky, and Maggie (McCurran) all rebounded well in post.”
