Team looks to maintain strong conference standing

Zionsville — The Zionsville softball team is going to have a different look from a season ago.

The team won’t have the power they had last season but will contend with versatility and speed.

“I am excited for the season,” Zionsville head coach Lori Esparza said. “We will have five new girls in the lineup, and they are going to add a little spark in our game. It is going to be a different type of team this year. We aren’t going to have as much power, but we are going to have more parity and speed.”

The one disappointing thing for Esparza — as well as most of the teams around central Indiana — has been the lack of practice time outside due to the inclement weather.

With some of the new players on the roster, she said, it has been hard to identify some of the things the Eagles want to work on early in the season.

“That has been the one disappointing thing — we want to get outside,” Esparza said. “Until we get outside, we don’t know what holes we have and what questions we have.”

With the different type of lineup this season, Esparza said it presents new exciting challenges.

“We have a lot of room for growth,” Esparza said. “It makes us, as coaches, think a lot about what we want to do because we have a lot of options.”
