Eagles bounce back to rock Westfield 35-18

Zionsville — Zionsville’s offense started out a bit shaky, but finished strong Friday at home against Westfield. The Eagles defeated the Shamrocks 35-18.

Zionsville went up on a 56yard bomb from Parker Dunshee to Chris Mason to put the Eagles up 7-0 with 6:25 remaining in the first quarter.

But, the Shamrocks came right back on an 11-play drive to convert a field goal to make the score 7-3.

After the Eagles second turnover of the quarter, the Shamrocks quickly converted the Eagles’ mistake into seven points on a 35-yard touchdown pass from Nick Ferrer to Devin Reece to make the score 10-7 with 33.9 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Zionsville coach Larry McWhorter said they were surprised in the first half by what they saw.

“They brought a lot of pressure that we did not expect,” McWhorter said. “We did not anticipate that. I just did not think we were ready for them offensively. Defensively, we were a step behind. We were executing the game plan, but not at the speed we were hoping we would be at. But, it got a lot better in the second half.”

The Eagles would come out of the gates finally offensively in the third quarter when Coleton Smith ran through the line and through the Shamrocks’ secondary on his way to a 45-yard touchdown scamper to make the score 14-10 with 5:17 remaining in third quarter.

The Eagles defense would do the rest as they sufficiently shut down the Rocks offense in the third quarter.

Scotty Penola said the defense really stepped up in the second half and put it all together.
