Noteworthies for July 4

Resident reports for Air Force Academy

Ben Nicholson, son of Jim and Margy Nicholson and 2012 graduate of Zionsville Community High School, has received an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Nicholson will report for Basic Cadet Training on Thursday, June 28. He received his nomination from Congressman Todd Rokita.

 

Brennan graduates from Earlham

Kaitlin Brennan, daughter of Valerie and Robert Brennan of Zionsville, earned a bachelor of arts degree from Earlham College during commencement ceremonies on May 5.

Brennan double-majored in English and Spanish and Hispanic studies at Earlham. She also received college honors.

Brennan also received the Arthur M. Charles Service Award during an award convocation on April 18.

This award is given to foreign language students in recognition of service to the foreign language department, excellence in foreign language study and fine character. She was selected for the award by the language department.

 

Moore wins scholarship

Rhianna Moore, a 2012 Zionsville Community high school graduate, was one of eight seniors chosen to receive the State Bank of LIzton’s Community Bankers Scholarship.

She will be studying at Indiana University.

 

Starks earns masters degree

Michael H. Starks of Zionsville received his Master of Library Science degree from the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University, Indianapolis, on May 13.

Starks is a project assistant for marketing and communications at the Indiana University Library, Bloomington, for “Variations on Video,” a collaboration among educational institutions and open-source software communities to enable libraries and archives to easily curate, distribute and provide online access to their video and audio collections in support of teaching, learning and research.

Starks is also a consultant to libraries on using computers, the web and social networking to connect with patrons and boost library use, and instructs library users on social media and Microsoft Office applications.

He also holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and political science from Indiana University, Bloomington.

 

Langford name to Vanderbilt dean’s list

Justin David Langford was named to the Vanderbilt University dean’s list for the 2012 spring semester.

Langford is a junior studying mechanical engineering. He is the son of Bryan and Janice Langford of Zionsville.

 

Linn named to Union president’s list

 Dionna Linn of Whitestown was named to the Union University president’s list for the spring 2012 semester.

The president's list includes full-time students who achieve a 4.0 grade-point average on a four-point scale.

 

Bing named to Central dean’s list

Rachel Bing from Zionsville was named to the spring 2012 Central College dean’s list.

Bing is the daughter of Jim and Lori Bing.

The honor is awarded to full-time students who achieve a 3.5 grade-point average or higher on a 4.0 scale while taking 12 or more graded credit hours for the semester.

 

Payne graduates from William Woods

Eliza C Payne of Zionsville, graduated in May from William Woods University with a bachelor of science degree.

Actor Val Kilmer was the speaker at WWU’s undergraduate commencement May 5. One of the most prolific actors of his generation, Kilmer s memorable roles include Batman in “Batman Forever,” Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's “The Doors,” Doc Holliday in “Tombstone” and Simon Templar in “The Saint.”

Kilmer spent the week on the William Woods campus meeting with various groups and performing his one-man play, “Citizen Twain.”

Graduate students heard from Ken Lyle, chief financial officer for Fulton State Hospital and an adjunct faculty member for WWU.

 

Cleveland graduates from Furman

Melinda Cleveland of Zionsville earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology from Furman University.

She is the daughter of Dr. Cheryl B. Cleveland of Zionsville, and Dr. John A. Cleveland, Jr. of Stow, Mass.

 

Students named to UE dean’s list

Andrew Bennett of Zionsville, majoring in finance, and Melanie Qua of Zionsville, majoring in nursing, were named to the University of Evansville’s dean list for the 2012 spring semester.

The students made the dean’s list by achieving at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.

 

Chapman graduates from Baylor

Zionsville resident Nathaniel Cole Chapman earned a bachelor of business administration and entrepreneurship degree from Baylor University in May.

Baylor University conferred more than 2,100 graduates during the spring commencement.
