Neel named to dean’s list
Jay Neel of Zionsville has been named to the dean’s list at the Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences for the fall semester of 2008 in recognition of outstanding academic achievement.
To be eligible for dean’s list, students must complete at least 12 graded credit hours in a single semester, earning at least a 3.7 GPA.
Miller studying in Germany
Cormack Miller, son of Steve and Jane Miller of Zionsville, and a junior at Wabash College Crawfordsville, is on a 10-day field trip to Berlin, Germany, with 12 fellow students and two professors. The students are studying history, architecture, government, culture, language, religion and Berlin’s education system. The trip is the culmination of German 230, taken in spring semester; Miller and the other students will present their findings in end-of-course oral presentations.
Following the trip, Miller will return to Wabash for a 15-week paid summer internship in the IT Department as a desktop specialist. At Wabash, he plays cello for the college orchestra and the Crawfordsville Community Orchestra, plays team lacrosse, and is a member of Alpha Phi Omega, a service fraternity.
Miller, a German and biology major, will graduate in May 2010. He is a 2006 graduate of Zionsville Community High School.
Local students graduate from IWU
Fourteen students from Boone County were among the 2,100 students who received degrees during graduation ceremonies on Saturday, April 25, at Indiana Wesleyan University’s main campus in Marion.
Graduating were the following Zionsville students: Holly Anderson, bachelor of science in accounting; Theodore Baker, master of business administration - applied; Tamara Bothwell, bachelor of science in marketing; David Loewer, master of business administration - applied management; Kathryn Lucas, bachelor of science in marketing; and Debora Lyon, bachelor of science in business information systems.
Lebanon graduates were: Maria Duvall, master of business administration in accounting; Heather Kenneson, bachelor of arts in history; Sawvalak Klemme, master of business administration, applied management; Penny Redman, bachelor of science in management; Mary Rokusek, bachelor of science in management; Tiffany Timme, master of education; and Anita Wolfe, master of business administration, accounting.
Jason Scott of Thorntown received his master of business administration in health care management.
Dance studio
receive awards
The new Expressenz Dance Center, 9850 N. Michigan Road, competed against dozens of dance studios from around the state and region for prestigious top honors at Showstopper, the largest dance competition in the country, in Indianapolis April 24 through April 26.
The center’s entries placed as follows:
Elaina Welch received second place overall in Teen Competitive Solo; Victoria Blackwell received eighth place overall in Teen Competitive Solo; Adriana Allman received fourth place overall in Teen Competitive Solo; Molly Cason received third place overall in Senior Competitive Solo; Wesley Cade received seventh place overall in Senior Competitive Solo; Emmalie Buck received fifth place overall in Teen Competitive Solo; Christiana Buck received fifth place overall in Senior Competitive Solo; Alyssa Thomas received third place overall in Teen Competitive Solo; Brittney Richards received fourth place overall in Senior Competitive Solo; “Letting Go” received fourth place overall in Teen Competitive Duet/Trio; “Take Off” received fifth place overall in Senior Competitive Duet/Trio; “Bring Me to Life” received fifth place overall in Senior Competitive Small, “Welcome to the Jungle” received second place overall in Teen Competitive Large, “Hit the Road Jack” received third place overall in Junior Competitive Small , “Raise Me Up” received second place overall in Junior Competitive Small; “I Don’t Want to Go” received third place overall in Senior Competitive Duet/Trio; “Never Alone” received second place overall in Senior Competitive Duet/Trio; “I Like it Like That” received ninth place overall in Senior Competitive Small; “Walk Like an Egyptian” received second place overall in Junior Competitive Small; “Sleeping Beauty Waltz” received seventh place overall in Junior Competitive Small, and “Surrender” received first place overall in Senior Competitive Small.
Expressenz Dance Center also received 11 double platinum, 14 platinum, and four gold awards. This qualifies the studio to go to the Showstopper National Finals this summer.
Karla Curatolo, Expressenz Dance Center owner and director, said she is excited to have done so well for a new studio.
Two local students receive scholarships
Physicians Health Plan of Northern Indiana, Inc. (PHP), a local managed-care organization, concluded its 2008-09 Scholarship Program by honoring two Zionsville students.
David Deist of Zionsville placed first and received a one-time scholarship of $3,000. Deist will graduate from Zionsville Community High School this June and plans to attend Indiana University and major in optometry.
Justin Sanders of Zionsville, placed third in the program, receiving a one-time scholarship of $1,000. Justin also will graduate from Zionsville Community High School in 2009 and plans to major in pre-medicine.
This was the 21st year that PHP has provided scholarship opportunities to high school seniors who are pursuing a career in a health-related field.
Local student named Ernie Pyle Scholar
Sarah Thacker, a Zionsville Community High School senior, was recently named an Indiana University Ernie Pyle Scholar for the fall 2009 entering freshman class.
This honors program provides enhanced undergraduate opportunities for qualified students enrolled in the Indiana School of Journalism. Ernie Pyle Scholars gain direct admission to the Indiana School of Journalism and have the opportunity to enroll in honors classes, travel both nationally and abroad, and qualify for enhanced internships.
Additionally, Thacker was awarded a journalism scholarship for incoming freshmen who have a strong academic record and have demonstrated proficiency in high school journalism. Thacker is the co-editor of the ZCHS Harbinger
magazine.

Boone County Community Clinic recently awarded BOOST grant
The Community Foundation of Boone County has named the Boone County Community Clinic as a recipient of a BOOST Grant — Building Organization’s Operational Sustainability Today. The BOOST Grant will be used to fund training of a part time grant development and compliance manager for the clinic.
