The Lions Club has collected more than 50 pounds of keys to be recycled to raise money for Lions Cancer Control Fund of Indiana, Inc.
The club has been collecting keys for several years to raise money for the Lions Cancer Control Fund.
The fund was founded in 1946 and was the first Lions Clubs state project. The fund has provided support for treatment, education and research at the Indiana University Radiation Oncology Department at Indiana University School of Medicine.
The Lions of Indiana have also provided a patient advocate who provides emotional and non-medical support to patients and their families. The advocacy program assists with patient referrals to the Indiana University Simon Cancer Hospital and the Indiana Cancer Pavilion.
Clubs throughout Indiana and the nation provide containers in public and retail establishments to collect the keys.
Once the keys are collected, they are cleaned by Lions Club volunteers and sent to a recycler who then exchanges them for cash. The funds are then donated to the Lions Cancer Control Fund.
Nearly $6 million has been donated to provide technology and research in the battle against cancer.
Keys can be given to any member of the Zionsville Lions Club, 115 S. Elm St., or dropped off to recycle at Akard True Value Hardware, 25 Boone Village.
