A few weeks ago while traveling to a marching band competition, one of our buses caught on fire.
When Middlest was telling me that she was on that bus and they were yelling at the bus driver tha there was smoke, I realized she had been sitting in the back of the bus. I playfully gasped and admonished her for sitting in the back of the bus, because I always told my kids they were not allowed to sit in the back of the bus.
My rule was more out of homage to my mom, because she never allowed me to sit in the back of the bus. Her aversion wasn’t racial or anything like that. She always said the bad kids sat in the back of the bus. I was always told I was a good girl, so never gave sitting in the back much thought. When I got to about junior high, it occurred to me that the only way Mom knew about the back of the bus was if she had sat in the back of her bus as a kid. I decided that I needed to find out for myself and sat in the back anyway. I didn’t tell her.
