Beef and Boards — you surprised me yet again.
I have never seen the 1941 movie, Arsenic & Old Lace, and didn’t know much about the show prior to media night.
I am not a big “chick flick” person and assumed this comedy was targeted to that audience, but to my pleasant surprise, it was a great production for all age and gender groups. I laughed out loud many times, which is something I don’t usually do. Well done — a great show was chosen to kickoff a 40-year milestone.
The show is about Brewster sisters Martha (Gerri Weagraff) and Abby Brewster (Karen Pappas) who take it upon themselves to help lonely men by serving and killing them with a special blend of arsenic, cyanide and stychnine to homemade elderberry wine. The bodies start piling up with the help of their nephew, Teddy, (Douglas E. Stark) who thinks he is Theodore Roosevelt. Their nephew Mortimer (David Schmittou) learns the shocking truth and only becomes more frantic when his maniacal brother Jonathan (Jeff Stockberger) and his sidekick Dr. Einstein (Eddie Curry) make a surprise visit.
