Jane Newbold Hyatt passed away on Jan. 1, 2013. Writer, educator, artist, thespian, and mother, she lived for the past 20 years Las Vegas, N.M., where she taught English at Highlands University and Luna Community College and was active in local theater and arts.
She was born Jane Helen Newbold on April 29, 1934 in Manhattan, and she grew up near Colt’s Neck, N.J., graduating from St. Margaret’s School and Vassar College before moving to New York City to work for Time/Life, The New Yorker, and Little Brown Publishers. There she met her future husband, Paul Hyatt. The two married in 1959 and operated a furniture store in Zionsville, while raising three children: Charles Winton (1961), Elizabeth Jane (1962), and Emily Ann (1965), who each have their own children: Grace Jane Hyatt, Margaret Schroer, and Kate and Jonathan Olds.
She earned a masters degree in education from Butler University and taught English for 15 Years at Zionsville Junior High School and Brebeuf Preparatory School while acting and assisting with the Off-Main Street Players and other community groups. She divorced in 1979 and lived for three years in Ames, Iowa before moving to the southwest.
The author/artist of numerous stories, paintings, plays, articles, and inspirations to many students, she self-published seven novels and was loved by many.
