More flu clinics in 2010
The Boone County Health Department has scheduled two additional free H1N1 vaccination clinics open to the general public in addition to the target groups. One clinic will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4 at Zionsville Community High School, 1000 Mulberry St., Zionsville. The second clinic will be held from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m Monday, Jan. 11, at the Boone County Fairgrounds, 1300 E. 100 S, Lebanon.
The Indiana State Board of Health and the BCHD strongly encourage the public to get a flu shot during what may be a lull in the H1N1 influenza activity. It takes two weeks to build immunity after the vaccination, so get the shot now while influenza activity is low. College students under age 24 should get the shot before going back to school. Higher risk persons are encouraged to make getting a vaccine a priority.
H1N1 vaccinations remain available to the general public and the priority groups. These vaccinations are available for a modest administration fee at many local physician practices and local participating pharmacies, as well as at the free clinics sponsored by the BCHD. Children under 10 should receive a second H1N1 vaccination at least 28 days after their initial H1N1 vaccination.
Basic precautionary measures to prevent the spread of a cold, influenza or any infectious disease include:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Dispose of the tissue in the trash after you use it. If no tissue is available, cough or sneeze into your sleeve.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze.
• Avoid contact with sick people.
• If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit your contact with others to keep from infecting them.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
