Deputy injured when cruiser overturns
A 22-year veteran of the Boone County Sheriff’s Office was treated for head injuries after a crash on U.S. 52 about three miles north of Lebanon at 3 a.m. Friday.
Lt. Jeff Keller, 47, Lebanon, was trapped in his upside-down vehicle, said BCSO Deputy Chris Burcham.
Keller was treated at Witham Health Services and released several hours later, Burcham said in a press release.
A witness told investigators that Keller’s vehicle went into the median, hit a drainage culvert and rolled several times, coming to rest on its top in the highway’s northbound lane, Burcham said.
Center Township Fire Department; Boone County EMS, and officers from the Advance, Lebanon and Thorntown police departments assisted the sheriff’s department, Burcham said.
It’s not clear what caused the crash, Burcham said.
Keller was wearing a seat belt, which “drastically” reduced the risk of injury, Sheriff Ken Campbell said in the release.
He thanked the other agencies who helped at the crash and covered BCSO runs during the investigation.
While Keller was able to radio for help, neither he nor the witness knew their exact location.
A GPS positioning system pin-pointed the crash site, Campbell said. The system was recently installed in all of the department’s vehicles.
“It might have taken us several extra minutes to locate him otherwise,” Campbell said.
“Our main concern is Lt. Keller’s health; we are thankful that it does not appear he was seriously injured,” Campbell said.
“Jeff is a good friend of mine,” Burcham said. “It really hits home when someone you not only work with, but are friends with, gets hurt in a work-related incident. My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family.”
