Branding committee down to three logos
The Zionsville Branding Committee is down to three possible choices on a new logo for Zionsville.
Now, citizens will be given an opportunity to offer feedback before the committee settles on a final choice.
“We think these are designs the community will be very, very happy with,” Economic Development Commission member Bob Goodman said. “They are not too big a change, but they are a change.”
The new tagline, selected from among a dozen different ideas, is “For all the right reasons.”
Citizens can see the new logos and give feedback on which one they like best at www.zionsvilleedc.com/branding.html.
The committee will meet in a couple weeks and use that feedback to help make its final decision, committee member Steve Russo said.
When a logo is chosen, each will be subtly altered to fit the three organizations that have signed on for the new image: the EDC (who funded the project), the Greater Zionsville Chamber of Commerce and the Town of Zionsville.
Scott Johnson, the lead designer at Dean Johnson Design, led the Zionsville branding project. As part of background research for the logos, he had roundtable discussions with members of the branding committee, comprised of representatives from the Greater Zionsville Progress Committee, EDC, Zionsville Merchants Association, chamber of commerce, town council and Eagle and Union townships.
“The Zionsville group didn’t necessarily agree on everything individually, but you could see a good back-and-forth dialogue between them,” Johnson said. “Walls were not put up.”
Johnson traveled throughout the town to get a sense of what it was all about.
“We also looked at a lot of other communities locally and nationally to sort of compare what quality communities outside large cities have been doing,” Johnson said.
Dean Johnson Design has clients as diverse as the NCAA, MIBOR, Arts Council of Indianapolis and Baker & Daniels law firm, among many others.
“I was just thrilled we were able to get Dean Johnson,” Russo said. “They are the preeminent image designers in the state. And working with Scott was a dream.”
The three final logo designs were chosen from among 17 others.
“The first one, ‘A,’ is probably the most far out interpretation,” Johnson said. “We took the leaf and abstracted it. The brick color (used on the “Z” below the trees) is inherent to Zionsville and its brand and what it’s about.”
The other two were more traditional variations, he said.
The tagline, Johnson said, sums up everything in one statement and leaves it open to a person’s interpretation.
“And it works from an economic development point of view, too” Russo said. “A business asks, ‘Why should we come to Zionsville?’ Well, for all the right reasons.”
Chamber director Ray Cortopassi agreed.
“Each logo is meant to appeal not only to our core audience of people who live in and visit Zionsville, but also the business community at large,” he said. “We wanted something that would speak to corporations to let them know that Zionsville is open for business and a great place to call home. The whole point of our effort is to improve our economic vitality.”
