Community calendar for Nov. 25

Library holds events

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., can be reached at 873-3149 or visit www.zionsville.lib.in.us for more information.

• Heroes’ Tree — Beginning Nov. 1, a tree featuring handmade ornaments created by community members to honor a service member will be displayed in Youth Services. Individuals of all ages are encouraged to participate. Ideas and free ornament templates are available at the reference desks. Ornaments will be displayed throughout the holiday season.

• Fall Story Time — now through Dec. 4 for newborn to age 6. A Hussey-Mayfield library card is required during the first week of registration, and is then open to non-cardholders wishing to participate. Registration is required.

• Model Railroad Display — now until Dec. 31. A wonderland village featuring two S-scale and two O-scale model trains, plus a trolley will be on display in the youth department. Trains will run on a daily schedule: 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

• Paws to Read — 4 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1, grades K through fifth. Share a book with a furry friend from TheraPets of Indiana. Register for 15 minutes of one-on-one dog and kid bonding. Registration required.

• Teen Council will meet from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 1. Interested teens grade seventh through 12th are welcome. Registration not required.

• Music Group Presents — Winter Themes, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1. Refreshments provided, registration required.

• Time Machine Book Club — Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 1 for youth ages 8 to 12 and the adults who register with them. This is a five-month program designed to help families introduce youth to classic literature. A mandatory parent information session will take place at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 14.

• Reader’s Theater Club — 4 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 3, grades third through fifth. Practice begins for a performance of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 during the library’s annual Holiday Stroll. Registration required.

• Annual Holiday Stroll — 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5 and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 6. Celebrate “Christmas in the Village” at the library. Registration is not required.

• Melchoir Marionettes will perform from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 6. All ages welcome.

• Wrap It Up — 3 p.m., Monday, Dec. 7, grades K through fifth. Drop in and make your own wrapping paper. Registration required.

• Midday Connection — 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8. Adults are invited to take a break, bring a sack lunch and join fellow book lovers to talk about favorite authors during this drop-in book club event known as Books over Coffee. Beverages and treats provided. Preregistration is not required.

• Winter Preschool Storytime registration begins at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, for cardholders and at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 16, for non-cardholders.

• Polar Express Pajama Party — 10 a.m., Friday, Dec. 11 or Saturday, Dec. 12, ages 3 to 6. Jump on board the Polar Express. Bring your holiday spirit and wear your pajamas. Registration required.

• Teen Winter Reading — Dec. 13 to Jan. 8. Students in grades sixth through 12th are invited to earn prizes while they read books — one raffle entry per book. Enter at the library or online at the library Web site.

• The Story Stop: The Best Snowman Ever — 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 14. Registration begins Monday, Nov. 30. Snow stories and a wintery craft await students first and second grades. Participants should wear clothing they can paint in as they create a snowman doorstop to take home.

• Food for Fines continues through Tuesday, Dec. 15. Erase overdue fines and help others. Each $1 in overdue fines can be paid with a nonperishable food item. Glass containers cannot be accepted. Proceeds will benefit Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana.

• Dinosaur Stomp — 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 17. Children ages 3 to 6.

• Library Closed: Thursday, Dec. 24 to Sunday, Dec. 27. Regular hours will resume at 9:30 a.m Monday, Dec. 28. The library will also be closed at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 31 and remain closed Friday, Jan 1. Regular hours will resume at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan 2.

• Annual Chili Bowl and Holiday Boutique Sale — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. Pick from hundreds of painted bowls and have yours filled with delicious chili.

• Guild Holiday Bake Sale — 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6. The Holiday Trolley stops at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center. Call 873-4900 for more information.

Various elements including proportion, anatomy, gesture, line quality, tone and foreshortening will be discussed. Handouts will be provided to help reinforce basic concepts. Several approaches of these elements will be demonstrated, and individual instruction will be given. Students should bring preferred drawing materials and paper to workshop.

• Medicare Open Enrollment — Get one-on-one assistance with Medicare Part A, B, C and D from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4. Registration required. Bring your Medicare Card and list of medications.

• Computer classes — 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 3. Prepare mailing labels for holiday cards. Cost of this one-session class is $39 and includes finished product and a flash drive. Registration required. 9 a.m. to noon, Tuesday, Dec. 8. Students from previous classes can come get help finishing projects. Bring your materials and supplies. There is no cost, but registration is required. Enroll now for February computer classes.

• Make Authentic Gingerbread Houses — 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1 and Wednesday, Dec. 2. Rene Stanley fron Homewood Health Campus will instruct the art of assembling and decorating an authentic gingerbread house. This project will take two days to complete. Class size limited to 10, no cost, registration required.



Zion Nature Center events

• Nature Ornaments — Noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5 and 12, and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 13. All ages. Create decorations for your tree using natural materials. Craft fees vary.

• Cardinals — 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 12 and 13. All ages learn interesting facts about cardinals and make ornaments, gifts and crafts. Program is free, craft fees vary.

• Holidays are for the Birds — noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 19 and Sunday, Dec. 20. All ages. Make a holiday treat for the birds. Cost is $1.

• Animals of the North Pole — 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21. All ages. Live animals will be introduced, including a reindeer. Seating is limited and reservations are required by e-mailing the nature center or by calling. Presentation is free and is sponsored by the Zionsville Kiwanis Club.

• Holiday Open House — 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22. All ages. Winter solstice hike followed by refreshments and crafts. Free.

• The Zion Nature Center will be closed on Dec. 26 and 27.

Lions Club fruit sale

under way

The 21st Annual Lions Club Scholarship Fruit Sale is under way. All proceeds support the Zionsville Lions Club Scholarship Fund scholarships and are awarded to an outstanding service minded student from Zionsville Community High School.

The $3,000 scholarship is 100 percent supported by the fruit sale. Don’t miss out on Florida Indian River grapefruit or navel oranges, or try Washington Red or Yellow Delicious apples. Lions Club greeting cards on sale

The Zionsville Lions Club has created a holiday greeting card using a photo of the Lions Park Gazebo. Cards are sold in packs of 10 for $5 and can be purchased at the Greater Zionsville Chamber of Commerce office or Akard True Value Hardware after Sunday, Nov. 22.

They can be preordered by visiting www.zionsvillelions.com. All proceeds support the maintenance of Lions Park.



ZEF accepts Eagle Honors donations

The Zionsville Education Foundation is now accepting donations for its Eagle Honors program. Giving an Eagle Honor is a way to say thank you to a teacher, coach, bus driver, counselor, administrator, or anyone who has made the school year a success.

A gift card with a personal message of thanks will be sent to the honoree(s) and their name(s) will be listed in the ZEF annual report. These tax-deductible gifts will fund grants to promote academic excellence in all Zionsville Community Schools.

Have Breakfast

with Santa

Tri Kappa’s annual Breakfast with Santa will be on Saturday, Dec. 5 at Stonegate Elementary. Enjoy a hot breakfast, visit and get a picture with Santa, do crafts, enjoy live music and a candy cane cake walk or visit Rudolph’s Gift Shop. Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.

Giving Tree benefits

pediatric patients

Akard True Value Hardware is the location of this year’s Zionsville Giving Tree. The tree benefits pediatric patients at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital.

From Dec. 1 to 24, Boone County residents can support pediatric patients at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital at St. Vincent this holiday season by contributing to the Zionsville Giving Tree. Hanging from the tree are wish list ornaments that include desired toys, games and books for pediatric inpatients.

First Fridays are back

The Zionsvile art galleries, artists’ studios and art venues are pleased to announce that they are open late for First Fridays gallery walk nights, continuing every month, all year round. The next date is Friday, Dec. 4.

Galleries will be open late from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will offer special meet the artist events, music and refreshments. First Fridays are free and open to the public and there is always free parking.

Telephone book

recycling set

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, Boy Scout Pack No. 358 will be on site to unload cars of telephone books for recycling. If you can’t make it Saturday, the bin will still be available Sunday morning, but boy scouts will not be there to unload them.

Off-Main Street Players perform

The Off-Main Street Players will perform “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play” on Saturday Dec. 5 and Sunday, Dec. 6. Show times are 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

All performances will take place in the Community Room at the Zionsville Town Hall. Tickets are $10 each for festival seating and may be purchased by calling the box office at 595-3700 or visiting www.offmainstreetplayers.org.



Free concert

at ZUMC

A free community concert entitled “Christmas Musical Kaleidoscope 2009” will be presented at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6, at the Zionsville United Methodist Church on the northwest corner of Mulberry-Whitestown Road and Ford Road. Music will be performed by the Zionsville Symphonic Concert Band and The ZUMC Chancel Choir.

Amy Kindred, former director of the Munce Art Center in Zionsville, will be the guest speaker at Heartland Unitarian Universalist Church at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6. Her topic will be “Four Agreements to a More Peaceful Existence.”

Town hall

meeting announced

The Zionsville Community Conversation Group presents the third speaker in their Town Hall Series for the season at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 8. The meeting will take place at the Zionsville Town Hall. Ruth Van Reken will present the topic of diversity. She is a national and international speaker on diversity as well as author of the book, Third Culture Kids: Growing up Among Worlds.

Women’s retreat planned

Zionsville Presbyterian Church has announced its Women’s Retreat at the Abe Martin Lodge in Nashville, Ind. Registration deadline is Friday, Dec. 18, and is open now for the Feb. 5 to 7 retreat. Space is limited.
