County vaccinated in clinic

Nearly 1,000 people were vaccinated at the county’s first H1N1 flu clinic Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Cindy Murphy, RN, director of nursing and vital records for the Boone County Health Department, said 950 people received the vaccine during the clinic.

“That’s right there in that ballpark figure we thought we could process,” Murphy said. “It went very well, and we didn’t have to close early.”

H. Servies Jr., MD, Boone County Health Department health officer, said they had around 1,000 doses of the vaccine at the start of the clinic.

“We’re getting pretty good amounts (of the vaccine) now,” he said, “but we can’t guarantee anything.”

Wednesday’s clinic was originally planned to be in the community building, but it was moved to the pavilion when the larger building became available.

“I’m so happy we could come over here,” Murphy said, since the turnout was so high. The line outside consistently reached the community building during the first hour.

The clinic opened at 4 p.m., but Murphy said the line started at 2:30 p.m. when a group arrived with lawn chairs.

Servies said the biggest question he’s now getting is when non-high-risk groups will be able to be vaccinated.

“We just don’t know,” he said.

The next H1N1 clinic, for high-risk groups only, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at the community building at the fairgrounds. Use the north entrance.
