Head-on collision kills one

A head-on collision with a semi left a Waynetown woman dead Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 20, on Ind. 32.

Bonnie J. Goff, 67, was driving a silver 2006 Ford Escape westbound on Ind. 32 in the 4700 block when at around 2:38 p.m., she crossed the center line for an unknown reason, said Boone County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Brian Stevenson. A white International semi pulling a trailer of 25,000 pounds of dry foods was traveling eastbound on Ind. 32.

“At the last minute, she attempted to avoid the semi,” Stevenson said, “but she couldn’t and hit the semi head on.”

Goff was killed instantly, Stevenson said. She was ejected from the vehicle, and it was unknown whether or not she was wearing a seat belt. The semi crushed the Escape and ran off the road into a corn field.

The driver of the semi, Stephen Lehner, 42, Indianapolis, was transported to Witham Hospital and treated for minor injuries, Stevenson said.

The crash caused both lanes of Ind. 32 to close for roughly two hours as emergency workers treated Lehner and cleared the scene of car parts, broken glass and items scattered from the SUV. The Boone County Sheriff’s Office worked the crash and was assisted by Lebanon Police, Indiana State Police, Advance fire and Witham medics.

The accident continues to be under investigation. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor.
