Community calendar for Oct. 28

Library hosts events

The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library, 250 N. Fifth St., can be reached at 873-3149 or visit www.zionsville.lib.in.us for more information.

• Monster Mash — 10 a.m. or 1 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, ages 3 to 6. Shake and rattle those bones into the library for some not-so-frightening monster fun. Costumes welcome. Registration is required.

• Ghostly Gathering — 4 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 29, grades third to fifth. Share some ghostly tales, enjoy a hauntingly good snack and make a “boo-tiful” picture that will magically appear from the dark night. Registration is required.

• Animal Adventures Series Bats — 1 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30, ages 3 to 6 with a parent. Meet at the library for story time and walk to the Nature Center to meet and learn about the real animals that live there. Registration required.

• Heroes’ Tree — Beginning Nov. 1, a tree featuring handmade ornaments created by community members to honor a service member will be displayed in Youth Services. Individuals of all ages are encouraged to participate. Ideas and free ornament templates are available at the reference desks. Ornaments will be displayed throughout the holiday season.

• Paws to Read — 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 3, grades K through fifth. Share a book with a furry four-legged friend from TheraPets of Indiana. Registration required.

• Mosaic Magic — 4 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, grades K through third. See how harvest seeds can be used to make a mosaic picture of autumn. Registration required.

• Beginning/Intermedi-ate Watercolor and Acrylic Painting — 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 2 to Dec. 21. Beginning watercolor/acrylic class allows students to paint their chosen subjects such as still life, landscape, etc., while experimenting with two types of water media.

• Beginning/ Intermediate Drawing — 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 2 to Dec. 21. Students learn basic drawing skills by following along with the instructor’s demonstrations and through their own independent sketching of selected subject matter. Perspective, composition, contour drawing, positive and negative space, portrait, human and animal figure studies, landscape and nature studies will be addressed and the use of a variety of materials will be taught to achieve the student’s optimum success.

• From Sketch to Final Painting — 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, Nov. 2 to Dec. 21. Students will follow along with the instructor as they create acrylic paintings from initial sketch to final painting. More than one painting will be created during class.

• Intro to Digital Photography — 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays, Nov. 3 to Dec. 8. An introduction to digital photography with emphasis on both the technical and aesthetic aspects. This eight-week class will cover terms and software options, review the basic functions of your camera, digital imaging, elements of photography, advanced digital options, printing techniques and options, concept of photo essay and advanced techniques to expand on basics.

Boone Village

halloween party set

Join the merchants and service groups of Zionsville from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, for safe trick or treating. There will be a costume contest at 6 p.m. with trophies given for first, second and third place winners in each age group. Call Leigh Ann Akard at 873-5255 for more information.



Zion Nature Center activities announced

• Animal Adventures: Bats — 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30, ages 3 to 6. Free, but registration is required.

• Trick or Treat Hike — 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31, all ages. Come in costume, search for hidden treats and treasures. Free.



Experience Mystery at Maplelawn

Maplelawn Farmstead Inc. announces its first Mystery at Maplelawn event slated for 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Maplelawn Farmstead.

The same mystery story will be depicted both nights. The murder mystery dinner is set in 1937 and is presented by local actors. Guests will enjoy a harvest dinner while playing a part in solving the crime. Cost for the four-course dinner is $45 per person. No children allowed and reservations are required.

Safe trick or treats at airport

Montgomery Aviation will host Halloween at the Airport 2009. This event is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 31 at the Indianapolis Executive Airport. Join us for safe trick or treating for kids of all ages, treats, games, fun and prizes.



Trunk or Treat set

at Traders Point Christian Church

Kids can go from trunk to trunk collecting treats and sporting costumes while having great fun with neighbors and friends in a safe environment from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Traders Point Christian Church. Age appropriate, non-scary costumes are requested and children must be accompanied by an adult. Guests will enjoy candy, inflatables, hayrides, a bonfire, photo booth, food, pumpkin decorating and face painting.



Pre-carved pumpkin contest announced

Children grades K through fifth can enter a pre-carved pumpkin contest from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31 in front of the Lebanon Public Library. Pumpkins will be judged and prizes awarded. This contest is sponsored by the Boone County Historical Society. Call Judy Walburn at (765) 482-0870 for more information.



Gardener grants available

The Boone County Master Gardeners is offering grants for 2009. Each year grants are awarded to a Boone County resident or organization for a garden project with an educational component.

Women of Jazz

Jazz vocalist Sue Wicliff, along with some of the area’s most acclaimed jazz musicians, will present “Women of Jazz”, a selection of jazz standards representing the greats from Ella Fitzgerald to Diana Krall at the Zionsville Fellowship Church at 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. to meet

Safe Sitter classes offered

The Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville is offering Safe Sitter Classes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 5. Children age 11 to 13 years are eligible to attend.
