Community calendar for Oct. 7

Library hosts events

• Wii Play Games — 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 7, grades 6 to 12. Play games in the teen area of the library. Registration is not required.

• Special meeting of the Library Board — 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Lora Hussey Room. The public is welcome to attend this planning meeting.

• Pumpkin Decorating — 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16, all ages. You bring the pumpkin and we will provide the bling. Registration is required.

• Itty Bitty Story Time — 9:45 a.m. or 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 16, ages 1 to 2. Walkers and talkers can come have a great time with stories, songs, finger play and more. Registration is required.

• Book Talk: Music is Life — 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12. Librarians Ellen Leffler and Barbara Litkowski will lead this initial discussion of The Soloist. A special viewing of 2008 60 Minutes documentary on Nathaniel Ayers and Steve Lopez will be included.

• Mummies — 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 for grades second through fifth. Learn about ancient cultures by exploring the science and history of mummies. Registration is required.

• Ask the Advisor — Ask the Advisor financial assistance will be offered from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7. Vince Oelker and Rick Price from Bankers Life will answer questions regarding insurance, short and long term care, Medicare supplements and investments. No appointment necessary, walk-ins welcome.

• Support Group — Eye Openers, a low vision support group, meets at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, in the computer room. Open to everyone.

• Adult Art Class —5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Sign up now for October session on Thursday, Oct. 8, 15, 22 and 29, with local artist John Hanks from Sugar Creek Art Center. Registration is required by calling BCSSI. Cost is a total of $25 for all four weeks.

• Medicare ABCD — 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Oct. 9, and Tuesday, Oct. 13. Paul Deinlein from State Bank of Lizton Financial Services will tell you about Medicare changes and options available.

• Line Dancing — 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12 for beginners and 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for intermediates. Instructor is Teresa Russell. Cost is $6 per person.



Mothers and More meets

Mothers and More Northwest Indy/Zionsville/ West Carmel chapter will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7 at the Zionsville Presbyterian Church at 106th Street and Michigan Road in room 208. Study Club meet

Right to Life Banquet slated for Oct. 10

Boone County Right to Life is having a fundraising banquet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at Zionsville Fellowship Church. The cost is $30. Call Donna Williams at 769-3871 or Mark Frisby at (765) 482-7941 for more information.



Brick Street Chili

Cook-off set

The 15th Annual Brick Street Chili Cook-off will be held from 12 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 10 at The Friendly Tavern located at 290 S. Main St.

Free chili tasting is open to the public. Come and taste, then vote for your favorite. During the event Brown & Brown Insurance will be accepting monetary donations with all proceeds benefitting the Zionsville Food Bank. Brown & Brown also will be matching donations. In the past two years, over $5,000 has been raised to help feed families in Boone County and surrounding areas. Applications to compete are still being accepted.

Outdoor art walk

The Zionsville Chamber of Commerce and Zionsville Arts Initiative are hosting the town’s first outdoor art walk from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.

The artscape will feature works from more than 50 local and regional artists. The venue begins at Main and Hawthorne streets and runs along Elm to Pine streets.

Live music will be provided throughout the day and food, beer and wine will be available in a food court featuring local eateries. Admission is free.

Appreciation day

slated

Traders Point Christian Church is partnering with the Lebanon Community School Corporation to host a Community Appreciation Day from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at Lebanon High School located at 510 Essex Drive, Lebanon.

Everyone is invited to this free event. Enjoy basketball clinics by former NBA players Wayne Simien, Andrew Declercq and Dave Jamerson. Clinics are from 1 p.m to 3 p.m. for boys and girls grades second through fifth and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for boys and girls grades sixth through eighth.

In addition to basketball, participants can get a health screening, find answers for improving a job search or enjoy snacks.



Calling all volunteers

The Boone County Health Department, American Red Cross and Boone County Senior Services, Inc. will host a Volunteer Call-out event for the Boone County community from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the BCCSI Community Room. BCCSI is located at 515 Crown Pointe Drive in Lebanon.

Come receive information about Boone County Medical Reserve Corps and future H1N1 clinics that are in need of volunteer support. All volunteers will receive future training that will prepare them for their area of assistance.

Psi Iota Xi hosts reunion luncheon

The Auxiliary Chapter of Psi Iota Xi wil host its annual Reunion Luncheon at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 13, at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 1525 Mulberry St.

Town Hall Series

announces speaker

The Zionsville Community Conversation Group presents the first speaker in their Town Hall Series. Dr. Mann Spitler will address the topic of addictions by sharing the sad events that led to the death of his daughter of a heroin overdose.

The program, which will also be presented during the school day to Zionsville Community High School students, will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14 at the Town Hall.



EMT Basic Training coming soon

Boone County EMS Education in cooperation with Witham Health Services is presenting an EMT-Basic training class beginning Nov. 2. Applications are due by Friday, Oct. 16, and class size is limited to 22 students.

The class will consist of 39 sessions, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays until April 1, 2010. Cost of the course is $650, which includes all teaching materials, textbook and shirt for clinical rotations. A non-refundable $150 deposit must be submitted with application.

GhostWalk nears

Tickets are now on sale for the eighth annual edition of GhostWalk, an entertaining Halloween walking tour of the Zionsville Village. Presented by National Bank of Indianapolis, this event is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 16 and Saturday, Oct. 17.

This year’s event features all new stories and scripts. Tickets may be purchased securely online at www.sullivanmunce.org, via phone at 873-4900 or in person at the SullivanMunce Cultural Center.

Cost is $8 per adult member, $5 per youth member, $10 adult non-member and $6 youth non-member. Children younger than 2 are free.



Newcomers and friends to meet

Join the Zionsville Newcomers and Friends Club meeting from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19. It is at the home of Dee Hasty, in the Cobblestone subdivision.

Learn to be

more green

Eco-Cents at home presented by Boone REMC will host Recycling Trends from Fashion and Furniture presented by Green Piece Indy from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20 at the Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library. The program is free and the first 50 attendees will receive an energy saving gift from Boone REMC.



Experience Mystery at Maplelawn

Maplelawn Farmstead Inc. announces its first Mystery at Maplelawn event slated for 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 30, and Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Maplelawn Farmstead.

The same mystery story will be depicted both nights. The murder mystery dinner is set in 1937 and is presented by local actors. Guests will enjoy a harvest dinner while playing a part in solving the crime. Cost for the four-course dinner is $45 per person. No children allowed and reservations are required.

Safe Sitter classes offered

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Zionsville is offering Safe Sitter Classes from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 24 (participants will be certified with just one class). Your child must be 11 to 13 years old (you cannot be 10 or 14) to attend these classes. Go to the East Club, 1575 Mulberry St., to sign up. The cost is $55 per person (checks should be made out to Nancy LaFon). There is a limited number of participants per class and we have to know by the Tuesday before each class. If we do not have 6 participants, we will cancel the class and you will be notified to reschedule. Call 873-6670 with questions.

The Boone County Master Gardeners is offering grants for 2009. Each year grants are awarded to a Boone County resident or organization for a garden project with an educational component. Applications are due Nov. 1. V
