‘Celebration’ draws a record crowd

Zionsville — Several residents and a business were honored during the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet.

A record 190 people attended the Friday night, Jan. 25, banquet. Six awards were given, and Rep. Steve Braun (R - District 24) gave the keynote speech.

Ray Cortopassi served as emcee and introduced several awards.

“Tonight we get to celebrate the awesomeness that is Zionsville,” Cortopassi said. “We are all witnesses to that awesomeness.”

The Town Crier award was given to Bob Goodman, owner of Robert Goodman Jewelers. The award recognizes a person who made outstanding contributions to the town.

“This person is not shy in speaking his or her mind in whatever cause he or she believes in no matter what waves he or she may cause,” Cortopassi said. “This person is a big supporter of the arts and music department at the schools and a particular drag race that takes place on Main Street.”

Goodman was humbled by receiving the award.

“I don’t know if I deserve it,” he said. “I think the town and community deserves it more than I do, but I’m happy to keep it for the year.”

The Community Foundation of Boone County’s Lionel Dubay Sports Award was presented to Greg Kirkham, a guidance counselor at Zionsville Community High School. Indiana Supreme Court Justice Steven David presented the award.

Kirkham has coached baseball in Zionsville Little League, Zionsville Middle School and ZCHS.

“As a guidance counselor at Zionsville Community High School, Greg uses his coaching beliefs and philosophies to guide hundreds of students through high school and into college,” David said. “He has a passion for helping kids no matter what they endeavor to do.”

The second award given that night was the Dahlia Excellence in Service Award. The award was presented to Steve Carroll of the Boone Village Marsh Supermarket. The Dahlia award recognizes a deserving employee of a Zionsville business.

The third award was the Community Service Award, which was given to the Z’Bowl committee, which organized events around the time of last year’s Super Bowl in Indianapolis.

Z’Bowl Committee members include Ellie Lee Brown, Ellen Butz, Kathy Sloan Wood and Valerie Robbins Swack.

The Community Service Award recognizes the efforts of institutions or organizations toward the betterment and growth of the community.

“Long before last February, a core group of people started thinking about the big game coming to Indianapolis,” said Ray Cortopassi, who presented the award. “This group saw an opportunity not just for Indianapolis but for Zionsville.”

The Business of the Year went to ControlTech Heating and Cooling. The award recognizes a company that demonstrates leadership, innovation, commitment and good corporate citizenship in the Zionsville area.

The Business Professional of the Year Award was presented to Kelley Leix, vice president of business banking for PNC Bank. The award recognizes an individual whose performance, commitment and dedication to their profession is unparalleled.

The Emerging Professional of the Year Award was presented to Nathan Frampton, president of Fanimation. The award recognizes an outstanding young professional in the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce service area.
