County loses bridge funding

Officials still expect project to be completed.

Lebanon — But it may be too little, too late. The Indiana Department of Transportation on Jan. 29 removed the project from its list, costing it the other $2.5 million it will take in federal funds to build it.

The county must reapply, Commissioner Jeff Wolfe said, but he has been told that INDOT will give a “high priority” to the request.

Wolfe said this should not delay replacement of the bridge.

Zionsville Town Councilor Tim Haak said that he thinks a new bridge will still be built.

“We will still get our bridge built one way or the other,” he said. “The most important thing is getting the right bridge built there that everybody will be happy with.”

Zionsville Town Council President Jeff Papa said he had heard that INDOT would review projects if they were not moving forward.

“We sent a letter to the county saying that we would support a good project regardless of any past objections,” he said. “It’s a pretty unified effort to get that project moved forward.”

The $2.5 million grant, first approved in 1995, was among several projects for which the Indiana Department of Transportation canceled funding at the Jan. 29 meeting.
