Shoes and history offered at local shoe store

Kern Brothers Shoes, 57 Boone Village, offers a selection of shoes and a long history.

“The original store was started in 1924 in Frankfort by my grandfather,” third generation owner, Bill Kern said.

The original Kern Brothers were Kern’s grandfather and uncle, then in 1946 Kern’s father bought out his uncle and then it was a father-son partnership.

“Then in 1974 my father and I opened up the store in Zionsville,” Kern said.

Kern hasn’t looked back since, it’s just him now and his wife Linda Kern and a handful of wonderful employees, including Ceil Mattingly, Lisa Mattingly and high schoolers Jill Sutton, Laura McLaughlin, Jack Townsend, Kyle Rolland, Carly Whitsell and Tess Whitsell, he said.

“The community has also been a wonderful support. I think they like being able to park out front and just walk in and shop,” Kern said.

Kern says the community also enjoys the semi-annual spring/summer sale that started this past week and will last for approximately three weeks.

“A lot of people look forward to the sale, all summer items are reduced, it definitely keeps us busy,” Kern said.

So busy in fact the men’s section has expanded and a 10-year lease for Boone Village is in negotiations, Kern said.

“About two weeks ago we expanded the men’s  display area, since we are running out of room, but that’s our latest addition,” Kern said.

In addition to the new display there are a couple new lines of shoes that have been added to the long list of shoes already in the store he said.

“We added some spring lines like Volatile Footwear and No Sox shoes, which are similar to Nike Free shoes,” Kern said.

With all the new items, it’s interesting to display an original foot stool, some measuring tools and an original pair of shoes from the turn of the century, he said.

The store is open 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Sundays. Call 873-5756 for more information.
