Twenty-nine Zionsville students plan to give up their spring break vacation to do mission work in Haiti.
Last year, 11 Zionsville Community High School students and two faculty members made a trip to Haiti. This year, nearly three times that amount are making the trip, and 10 of the students from last year’s trip are making it again.
The students are planning to develop a sports park complete with two soccer fields, a baseball diamond and volleyball court.
“The very moment we got back last year, we all wanted to go back again,” said ZCHS senior Claire Poindexter, who went on the trip last spring break. “It’s not about us; it’s about serving others.”
David Poindexter, co-director of (I’m In) Coaching Best, which is organizing the trip, said the number of students has increased because the students who went last year learned a good lesson.
“They all realized that wealth is not always connected to happiness,” he said. “Their friends noticed and wanted to be a part of it.”
