A toast for Zionsville’s award-winning homebrewer

Surprise birthday gifts can often be a letdown, but one Zionsville man loves the gift his then girlfriend got him 15 years ago.

Ever since Tom Wallbank received a homebrewing kit, he has been brewing his own beer and just won the Indiana State Fair Brewers’ Cup for Homebrewer of the Year.

“My girlfriend, now wife, Belinda, bought the kit for me as a surprise,” Wallbank said. “She thought it’d be something fun for me to do, and it has been. My first couple of batches were pretty good, and that gave me some confidence in what I can do.”

Wallbank, an engineer for Eli Lilly, said homebrewing gives him a creative outlet.
