Staten Island tragedy hits home for one local woman

Fundraiser formed for Staten Island residents

Zionsville — After one local woman heard of the devastating impact after Hurricane Sandy hit the east cost earlier this month, she decided to do something about it.

Mary Ellen Kirby, a Staten Island native and Zionsville resident, is teaming up with a not-for-profit called Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation based out of Staten Island, New York. She is jump starting her campaign called SOS - Support Our Staten Island. She is looking for monetary donations, cleaning supplies and hygiene items now until Monday, Dec. 3.

Kirby is looking for hygiene and toiletries including items most people keep under the sink — lotions, deodorant, shampoo, hair brushes, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

“We could really put together a lot of stuff,” she said.

Kirby said she decided to hold a fundraising campaign specifically for Staten Island because she says many people forget about that part of New York.
