Library hosts events

• Adult Winter Reading — Now through Sunday, Feb. 28. Participants will earn a chance to win a “Retreat in a Box” or a day spa gift certificate each time they read a book and register the title at the library or online. Those who register in person will receive a free book.
• Suggestions for the next United We Read book are being accepted at the adult and teen reference desks until Sunday, Feb. 28.
• Demonstration: Fan Fare — 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3. With the biggest football bash approaching, adults can come have treats and help plan for that game day party. The program will demonstrate the basics of party planning, offer recipes and ideas for hosting a sports gathering.
• Curious George paints the library — 1 p.m. or 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3. For families. See what kind of mischief George can get into by hearing stories, paint pictures and start a Winter reading poster. Registration required.
• Poster Pals — 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5 for ages 3 to 6. Songs, stories and a craft. Registration is required.
• Friends Book Sale — Friday, Feb. 5, through Sunday, Feb. 7, in the program room. Preview sale from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, for $5 admission fee per adult. Regular hours are 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7. There is no admission charge for Saturday or Sunday. Shoppers may buy a grocery bag of books for $10 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. A bag of books will cost $5 on Sunday.
• Football Pre-Party — 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 7, for teens. Tasty treats, including make-your-own nacho dip bar and other football party favorites will be served. Participants may also enjoy face painting, football competitions and a chance to win prizes.
• Poetry: Love and Romance — 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 8. “How Do I Love Thee?” Performer and historian Glory-June Greiff presents poetry exploring the many aspects of love and romance just in time for Valentine’s Day.
• Valentine’s Special: Card marking — 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, for grades first through fifth. Make several Valentine’s Day cards with rubber stamps, card stock and other material with card designer Emily Wleklinski. Registration is required.
• Roth IRA session — 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 10. Hear industry experts discuss how individual investments may be affected by the new rules for the Roth IRA. Information on traditional IRAs will also be covered. A question and answer session will follow.

• Adult and Youth art classes — Sign up now for adult or youth art classes in ceramics, pottery, drawing, sculpture, painting or photography. New offerings this year include painting birthday parties, introduction to meditation and serger use. Classes started in January and registration is required.
• Bead Bowl 2010 — 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Feb. 5. This fun evening will feature food, a fashion show, bead demonstrations and the opportunity to meet local bead artists who will have many of their unique creations for view and sale. Tickets are $20 per person and all proceeds benefit the programs, exhibitions and events of the center.

ZCHS string
ensemble to perform
The Zionsville Arts Initiative, Lebanon Arts Council and Nancy Noel’s Sanctuary will present the Zionsville Community High School Honors String Ensemble in performance at 3:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.
Women’s retreat planned
Zionsville Presbyterian Church is holding a women’s retreat on Friday, Feb. 5, and Saturday, Feb. 6. Explore the lives of women in the Bible as you learn to live a legacy of love. Keynote speaker is Betty Van Campen, who is gifted at bringing these stories to life.

SuperStart! program announced
Traders Point Christian Church will host SuperStart! for fourth through sixth graders from 5:30 p.m. to midnight Friday, Feb. 5. The program encourages tweens to look for opportunities to do good works in their own communities. Nearly 1500 preteens from Indiana, Kentucky and Illinois are expected to attend. Purdue Choir to sing
The Purdue University Choir will sing at both services on Sunday, Feb. 7 at Zionsvile United Methodist Church. Services are at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. ZUMC is located at 9644 Whitestown Road.
Free H1N1 clinic set
The Boone County Health Department will hold a free H1N1 vaccine clinic from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at the Zionsville Town Hall in the Community Room. Another clinic will be from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Thorntown Library. The vaccine is now available to the general public and is recommended for everyone over 6 months of age.
Village Residents Association to meet
The Village Residents Association will hold its February meeting at Eagle Creek Coffee Company at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9. Perfect for Valentine’s Day, the topic “Wine and Chocolate” will be presented by local merchants. Members and their guests are welcome.
Viva Las Vegas
Take a chance and benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Zionsville and see Viva Las Vegas, produced by the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at the Colts Complex.
Complimentary appetizers, dessert, beer, wine, blackjack, roulette and more will be included. A live and silent auction will be emcee’d by Tom Zupancic along with live music.

An informal group is now starting to discuss aiding Zionsville’s Main Street businesses.

New station allows quick arrival to working fire
Fire crews were on the scene of a rural mobile home fire within four minutes of the alarm.
Zionsville fire Chief Jamie VanGorder said the firefighter’s response time was a critical factor in saving a significant portion of the home.
