Commissioners want $500,000 for Ford Road bridge replacement

Changing the speed limit  for the curve where Ford Road merges with West 96th Street could mean more delays in replacing a disintegrating concrete bridge.

On Tuesday, Oct. 9, the Boone County Board of Commissioners will ask the Boone County Council to approve up to $500,000 so they can begin installing a steel truss bridge over Eagle Creek. The council voted, 4-2, to withhold $294,500 from the bridge project, effectively halting it, until then; the Zionsville Town Council, and the commissioners could design a mutually acceptable replacement for the old bridge.

There could be another barricade, however; at their Monday, Oct. 1, meeting, Commissioner Marc Applegate said the 25mph speed limit previously approved for the Ford Road/West 96th Street curve, south of the bridge, may have to be changed.

“If we get into the project area, a design exception may be required,” Applegate said. “We want to stay as far away from a design exception as we can.”

Asking for an exception would involve state and federal agencies and could further delay replacement of the existing bridge, which was first suggested in 1994.
