Two dead in fiery car accident

Two people are dead after a vehicle crashed into a pole and caught fire Thursday morning, Aug. 16, on U.S. 421 north of 116th Street.

Zionsville police Capt. Doug Gauthier said the department received a call about a car on fire at 5:36 a.m.

“A motorcyclist stopped and said that there were two people inside,” he said. “By the time we got here, the car was fully engulfed in flames, and we were not able to get anyone out.”

Gauthier said the 2004 four door Chevrolet hit a telephone pole at a high rate of speed causing the car to set fire.

“It was a single vehicle accident with no witnesses,” he said. “We don’t know what caused the car to hit the pole.”

Gauthier said identification has not been confirmed due to the extent of the burns.

Gauthier said 421 was closed down to one lane in each direction for more than three hours while crews worked to clean up the scene. The case is still under investigation.
