Z’west honors vets, hosts Indy mayor
In honor of Veteran’s Day, Zionsville West Middle School had a special program offering gratitude and thanks to the many veterans who have served and who are currently serving in the armed forces.
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard spoke to the student body, parents and special guests as the program’s keynote speaker on Wednesday, Nov. 11.
“Those who have gone before us and those still there today are still as good as they have ever been,” Ballard said. “Putting on that uniform is very special. The sacrifice of our soldiers are celebrated and appreciated and today we celebrate what veterans have taught us — sacrifice, nobility and patriotism.”
Ballard, who served in the U.S. Marine Corps for 23 years, added “We thank and honor the veterans for what they have done and for what they continue to do.”
During the program, Z’West Principal Tim East read a speech from President Barack Obama, Boy Scout Troop No. 358 presented and retired the colors — the American Flag, the Indiana State Flag and the Zionsville Community Schools flag, attending veterans were recognized and the eighth-grade orchestra, seventh and eighth-grade choirs and eighth grade band performed. A bagpipe, played by student Chelsea Beyler, ended the program.
