At Black Swan Photo Gallery, located at 60 W. Pine St., it’s possible to view moments and experiences from all over the world from here in the Midwest to Europe — for no admission charge. They are Zionsville’s premier photography-only gallery and specialize in large-format work.
Photographers Kevin Swan and Shaun Austin Gordon, both Zionsville residents, opened the gallery in September after deciding their town was ideal for their plan. They were so right on that score that although they only began to look for space in the summer, things fell into place quickly.
One thing that sets them apart from other photo galleries, is that they print in their studio.
“We print everything we have in-house,” Ashley Judd, gallery manager, said. “Everything on our walls was printed in-studio.”
Most pieces are printed in 12 inches by 18 inches, 20 inches by 30 inches and 35 inches by 52 inches. However, they have the capability to print up to 42 inches wide and 100 feet long.
For that reason, in addition to printing work from artists for display, Black Swan will do print jobs, such as posters and other photography, for anyone.
Pricing for print jobs is available upon request and Judd said the turn-around time is 24 hours.
“My advice for someone who wants a big print is to bring us a large file,” Judd said. “Most JPEG photos, even if they are small, will still print well up to 20 inches by 30 inches.”
Also, all photographers are welcome to submit work for consideration for inclusion in the gallery.
Black Swan features seven photographers from the states of Mississippi, Georgia and California as well as locally from Zionsville and Indianapolis.
“People don’t think they’re real,” Judd said about some responses they have heard from visitors about the images. “They are so beautiful, people almost don’t believe it.”
And, as opposed to only featuring one or two photos from a photographer, Black Swan features an entire series of a photographer’s work.
“It’s a collection of what they did. It’s great the work we have is from practicing photographers and they have a lot to offer,” Judd said. “It’s not a piece, it’s 30 images that are all unique and great, and we’re just trying to get the work they gave in the gallery.”
Since Black Swan’s gallery space is small, they post one or two photographs from a series on the wall but keep all photographs in their flat files to be viewed.
“We’re happy to show additional work of a photographer, artist or series they’re interested in,” Judd said. “We love the work and we want to show it to anyone that comes in.”
Black Swan Photo Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday. They also participate in Zionsville’s First Friday and are open until 8 p.m. on those days.
