Zionsville —
Wearable art is Joan Carney’s passion, and for more than two decades she’s made it her business in downtown Zionsville.
But on May 31, the owner of Lilly’s Boutique Gallery will close the doors permanently on her business at the corner of Main and Cedar streets in Bender’s Square. She plans to follow her bliss in another direction, pursuing other fashion interests and traveling.
“I’m starting to work with wearable artists to do something exciting for Indianapolis,” Carney said mysteriously, refusing to elaborate.
She has made a career of purchasing merchandise from award-winning textile artists and jewelry artisans to sell at Lilly’s and has formed working relationships with weavers, painters, leather artists and others, traveling the world to purchase their creations.
“I just came back from Mexico and brought back copper jewelry from small copper villages in the mountains,” Carney said.
She also recently brought back authentic, hand-painted jewelry from Tibet that’s flying out the door on the necks, arms, fingers and ears of Lilly’s customers.
“I still have merchandise coming in every day,” Carney said. “I have all new spring and summer items. Everything in the store right now is spring and summer, with the exception of the consignments.”

Fine ‘tune’ing for finale
Vocal students are preparing for their annual Show Choir Finale at 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, in the Zionsville Performing Arts Center. The performance will feature the award-winning contest routines by both the Royalaires and Choralaires, other numbers done throughout the year, and various solos and ensemble groups.
