Concerts back in Lions park

Free concerts in Lions Park will return again this month.

Joyce Davis, four-year organizer of the concert series and six-year organizer of the Lincoln Park series, chose the theme for the 2009 concert summer series in Lions Park, “Memories are made of this.” The music chosen to be played is part of musical heritage of America from Hollywood and Broadway to band classics.

“I am so glad that the concert series is going on because in these economic times, it is lovely for families to be able to get a Sunday night simple supper, sit in the park and listen to great music for free.”

The concerts, put on by the Zionsville Lions’ Club, will be in the gazebo at 7 p.m. every Sunday evening in July. Bring your own lawn chairs and in case of rain, the concerts will be held at the Lions Clubhouse on Elm Street. Food and drinks including hot dogs, chips and a beverage will be provided by the Lions’ Club for a donation.

The opening night concert will be at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 5 and will feature Zionsville the Zionsville Concert Band. The band has 60 volunteer musicians performing Patriotic classics with a Tribute to John Phillip Sousa, the founder of the Zionsville Concert Band. John Richardson will be the conductor. Guest soloist, David Thompson will also perform.

On Sunday, July 12, the Indianapolis Municipal Band will present Broadway in the Park. The band will be conducted by Dr. David Bolin. The band consists of 60 volunteer musicians. Bolin is also chair of the Department of Music at Butler University. Leroy Lane, a long-time musical director is the associate director of the Indianapolis Municipal Band.

The concert for Sunday, July 19, will be performed by the Barton Rogers Jazz Band. They will be perform The Tapping Jazz, a selection of music from 1950 to 1955. Band leader is Jane Paio.

The final concert of the series will be on Sunday, July 26, and will feature the Indianapolis Symphonic Band with guest conductor Gary Wishmeyer. The program is called Beautiful Music for a Sunday Evening. Wishmeyer was the band director at Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis for many years. During his 40 years teaching, he earned almost every honor available to an Indiana educator including being inducted into the Indiana Bandmaster Hall of Fame in 2006.
