Express commuter bus service headed for county

Express bus service between downtown Indianapolis and the Lebanon Business Park could soon be provided thanks to funding from a grant received by the Boone Area Transit System.

Sue Ritz, director of Boone County Senior Services Inc., which oversees BATS, said requests for proposals have been sent to several bus companies. The service “hopefully” could begin by March 1, Ritz told the Boone County Healthy Coalition.

A Job Access and Reverse Commute grant from the Federal Transit Authority will support the express service, Ritz said. Riders would pay $3 one way.

The JARC program is meant to help people with limited or low income find and keep jobs, according to the FTA, an agency of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

“Many new entry-level jobs are located in suburban areas, and low-income individuals have difficulty accessing these jobs from their inner city, urban, or rural neighborhoods,” the FTA said.

Ritz said the grant totals $156,000 in federal and local funding. Bus company bids for the service are due Friday, Jan. 25, she said.

Some companies in the business park are finding it difficult to increase their work force because potential employees haven’t got transportation, Ritz said.

“This is one way we can try to get employees to the business park,” Ritz said.
