Storm blasts Boone County

Zionsville — For about 10 hours Wednesday, Dec. 26, there was just no way to safely traverse the roadways in Boone County and throughout the region.

Between 6:15 a.m. and 4 p.m., as heavy snow fell and was blown about by strong winds, Boone County Sheriff’s Office handled 55 calls for slide-offs or property damage accidents, Lebanon Police Department had a dozen runs, and Zionsville and Whitestown also responded to a few weather-related crashes.

A vast majority of those slide-offs were on I-65 and many of the calls for motorists in distress came in at the same time from different locations on the interstate. ISP responded to 159 crashes or vehicles that slid off roads in about six hours during Wednesday’s blizzard.

The most unusual crash of the storm in Boone County came at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday, when Karen Irwin, 37, of Zionsville, drove into a pond near the intersection of Willow Road and Summer Song Road in Zionsville. It was first reported as a personal injury accident with entrapment and a vehicle in the water.
