Former Lebanon police employee faces charges

Federal theft charges filed against Houghton.

The Indiana Office of the Attorney General demanded Monday, Jan. 14, via a mailed letter that former Lebanon Police Department administrative assistant Jamie Houghton reimburse the state the $42,083 auditors say she is responsible for after allegedly pocketing money paid by Lebanon citizens to obtain gun permits.

Houghton is also charged in federal court on three counts of theft from a program receiving federal funds.

Houghton, who worked at the department for seven years, resigned from the LPD in October, after an annual city audit by the Indiana State Board of Accounts discovered the discrepancy. This was the first time the fund for gun permits was reviewed, said City Attorney Bob Clutter.

“Lo and behold, they found this pretty quickly,” Clutter said.

The audit found $35,250 missing from gun permits. Houghton was ordered to pay additional costs associated with an investigation into the missing funds — $6,833 — for a total of $42,083.
