Whitestown approves sewer rate increase

Whitestown — Sewer rates for Whitestown Utilities customers will go up effective immediately, after the town council approved the increase 4-0 at a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Citizens Water/Citizens Energy Group has increased sewer rates 10.75 percent, but that’s not what consumers will be paying, Councilwoman Susan Austin said.

“I don’t want everyone to hiccup (thinking) that’s a 10.75 percent increase on their bill,” Austin said. “It’s an increase to the gallon rates.”

The bill for a residential consumer using 1,000 gallons per month will go up 33 cents a month; the average across-the-board increase is 1.65 percent, she said. The new rate per 1,000 gallons will be $4.34, in addition to a monthly service fee.

Citizens Water is expected to raise rates each year, she said. “We’re looking into alternative ways to implement changes (but) this one we have to pass along,” she said.

“The town has absorbed several rate increases,” Town Manager Tom Combiths said.
