Awarding of land contract delayed

Zionsville —

Awarding of a contract to rent 67.25 acres of county-owned farm land has been delayed for two weeks so language in the document can be clarified.

The Boone County Commissioners are reviewing five bids for the property, which is in two parcels, one 47.5 acres and the other 19.75 acres, along Indianapolis Avenue and Interstate 65. The land would be leased for three years.

Derrick Cameron had the highest bid for both parcels, at $348.48 per acre, followed by Crossroad Family Farms at $300 per acre, Tom Taylor, $260 per acre and $240 per acre from BCII Farms/Bruce Cunningham.

Alex Smith submitted separate bids, offering $275 per acre for the large field and $200 per acre for the small field. Mitchell Farms offered to pay $255 in 2013, $260 in 2014 and $265 in 2015, for the total acreage.

Bids for the cash rental — a term meaning that the farmer will pay a set price for using the property, rather than a share of the crop’s price — of the acreage were opened Nov. 8 at the Boone County Commissioners’ meeting.
