Twenty-one Hoosiers have died from flu-related illnesses through Jan. 14, the Indiana State Department of Health said Monday, Jan. 14.
Five of those victims were 65 or older. More than 400 flu viruses have been identified by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention since monitoring began on Oct. 1. The CDC’s latest “FluView” update was released Dec. 22.
Flu rates in Indiana are considered widespread to high, the ISDH said. The percentage of patients visiting 26 “sentinel” clinics with symptoms resembling influenza went from 3.40 percent two weeks ago to 7.27 percent the week ending Jan. 2, the ISDH said.
“These last two weeks we’ve been hearing a lot about it,” said Cindy Murphy, RN, administrator of the Boone County Health Department.
