Departments ask county council for $770K more in 2012

More than three quarters of a million dollars in additional spending requests will be presented to the Boone County Council at their October meeting — the same meeting at which the council is to consider approval of a sharply-reduced 2013 budget. The council will meet at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in the Boone County Office Annex, 116 W. Washington St., Lebanon.

The $771,904 initially sought by the Boone County Area Plan Commission, auditor, board of commissioners, clerk, highway department, sheriff’s office and highway department doesn’t include smaller amounts that can’t be moved from the general fund without county council approval, even though they are routine expenses.

An unusually hot summer is partially to blame for one of the requests. Sheriff Ken Campbell said he’s asking for $35,000 to cover utility bills resulting in part from having to cool the jail during a period when temperatures topped 90 degrees about 50 times, and broke 100 degrees.

“We expected it,” Campbell said, but “It’s not like we can throw the windows open and air out the building,” he said.

Lebanon Police Det.-Capt. Maurice Hobson searches the front yard at 2110 Crimson Lane, Lebanon, where Juventino Salinas Garcia received what were described as “severe” stab wounds to the neck just before 1 p.m. Monday, May 13. Police said Garcia was taken to Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. A woman was being questioned by police, Hobson said. According to police reports, Clada Garcia called 911 saying that she was in a vehicle in front of the home in the Hickory Meadows subdivision. Her husband had hurt her, she said, and was threatening to injure himself. The injured man was identified as Juventino Salinas Garcia in a press release issued by LPD Monday afternoon.
